Marilyn Pearson wants people to get to know Surrey-grown ingredients a little better.

It’s one reason why she involved herself in Flavours of Surrey, an annual event set for this Sunday (July 25) at Historic Stewart Farm in South Surrey.

For a third year, locally grown food is touted during the four-hour happening, starting at noon.

“I am doing the lion’s share of the food this year instead of the different restaurants,” Pearson, director of catering with Cuisine and Company, told the Now.

“It is an exciting event focusing (on) the local producers along with educating the public on where food comes from.”

The event is designed to promote awareness about local agriculture in a fun and interactive way.

Admission is free, but tickets are required for food tasting. Beer and wine samples (from local enterprises Big Ridge Brewing Company and River’s Bend Winery) are also featured.

There will be live entertainment (by The Halifax Wharfrats, Jennifer Kennedy and the The Dixie Strollers), educational booths, children’s activities, a farmer’s market and gardening workshops. It all happens at a beautiful venue overlooking farmland and Nicomekl River.

This year, the adventurous menu includes organic red quinoa salad, barbecue-roasted Fraser Valley corn medallions, chilled wild salmon skewers with cranberry and ginger teriyaki glaze, chicken cakes with organic green onion and ginger, and sugar cookies made with lemon, organic lavender and marigold.

Food-tasting tickets for Flavours of Surrey range from free (for kids eight and under) to $20 (adults).

“Lots of tickets are still available,” Pearson noted. “People tend to get them the day of (the event), apparently, but they can be ordered through the city website.”

Details are online at www.surrey.ca/flavours, email flavours@surrey.ca or dial 604-591-4307. Historic Stewart Farm is at 13723 Crescent Rd.
